Released in 2004, the game puts players in the shoes of Carl "CJ" Johnson, a former gang member who returns home to Los Santos after his mother's murder to find his old neighborhood in disarray. Throughout the story, CJ strives to rebuild his gang, navigate the corrupt underbelly of the state, and ultimately uncover the truth behind his mother's death.
San Andreas is Rockstar Games' largest and most ambitious open world to date, featuring three distinct major cities:
- Los Santos, a sprawling metropolis inspired by Los Angeles, complete with bustling streets, celebrity mansions, and sprawling suburbs.
- San Fierro, a hilly city inspired by San Francisco, known for its cable cars, steep inclines, and Asian-inspired districts.
- Las Venturas, a glittering desert city inspired by Las Vegas, featuring towering casinos, extravagant hotels, and bright neon lights.
Beyond these urban centers, San Andreas boasts a diverse range of environments, including deserts, forests, rural towns, and military bases. Players can freely explore this vast world on foot, by car, by motorcycle, by boat, and even by airplane, engaging in a variety of missions and activities:
- Story missions: Progress through the main narrative by completing a series of linear missions with specific objectives, which range from car chases and shootouts to stealthy infiltration and daring heists.
- Side activities: Engage in a wealth of optional activities scattered throughout the world, such as participating in street races, gambling in casinos, customizing your character's appearance, or managing various businesses.
- Minigames: Take a break from the action and participate in a variety of minigames, like attending driving school, playing arcade games, or even getting a haircut.
